Dry Needling: What’s Behind It

Dry Needling is a modern physiotherapy technique used to target myofascial trigger points within the muscles. It can help reduce muscle-related pain, relieve tension, and improve quality of movement. The treatment is generally not painful, is well tolerated by most patients, and at TheraIST it is always integrated into an individualised treatment plan.

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry Needling is a modern and effective treatment method used in physiotherapy. In this technique, fine sterile needles are applied to myofascial trigger points within the muscle. These trigger points are sensitive, tight bands in the muscle that can cause pain not only locally but also in other areas of the body, and may contribute to restricted movement.

How is it different from acupuncture?

Although similar needles are used in both Dry Needling and acupuncture, the two approaches differ fundamentally.

Acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine and the concept of meridians. Dry Needling, on the other hand, is a physiotherapeutic technique based on modern anatomy, neurophysiology, and clinical assessment.

When is Dry Needling used?

Dry Needling can be used as a supportive treatment method, particularly for reducing muscle-related pain and improving quality of movement. It is commonly used in conditions such as:

  • Neck and lower back pain
  • Shoulder problems and rotator cuff complaints
  • Tension-type headaches
  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Tennis elbow
  • Plantar fasciitis

Is the treatment painful?

Dry Needling is generally not painful. During the treatment, a brief mild twitching or cramping sensation may occur. This indicates that the targeted trigger point is being stimulated. Most patients find the treatment easy to tolerate and often report a noticeable sense of relief afterwards.

Our approach at TheraIST

At TheraIST, we never view Dry Needling as a standalone treatment. We always incorporate it into a comprehensive physiotherapy plan, tailored to the individual needs of each patient and based on a thorough clinical assessment.
